Vita has a boatload of RAM (and cross-game chat)

Despite recent rumors that Sony had slashed the amount of RAM inside it’s PS Vita in order to lower production costs and compete with Nintendo’s 3DS, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida today revealed that the speculation was just speculation.

“…The reason why we were able to include something like Party, which enables cross-game voice chat, is because we designed Vita so it always has enough resources to handle something like that behind the game while it’s running” said Yoshida-san, speaking to Eurogamer.

While the current PS3 systems sport a solid 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of VRAM, the PS Vita will ship with 512MB of system RAM and 128MB of VRAM.

Yoshida was, however, quick to point out the resolution difference between the two systems and the amount of system resources used is the reason Vita is able to do something like cross-game chat when the PS3 still can’t, much to the dismay of PS3 users who’ve been begging for the feature since the system launched.
